Pruno Truman and Carletta Sue Kay – Sleeping with the TV On / No No EP

Really pleased to announce the forthcoming release of ‘Sleeping with the TV On / No No’ – a new collaborative EP by San Francisco based artists Pruno Truman and Carletta
Sue Kay
. The release, available on 10” vinyl and in digital formats is to be released on July 8th 2013. Listen to the first track, the haunting, beautiful insomniac ballad ‘Sleeping with the TV on’:

Pruno Truman was born in Fresno, California. She studied at the University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts in Central Eurasian studies, emphasis in the ecological consequences of soviet era policies in the Caspian states and the greater Caucuses and what she came to regard as “the great shame”. It was there that she participated in Lydia Deshultz’s controversial
poetry seminars and where she first encountered many of the surrealist poets who would come to influence her writing style. She stated in an early tract that she wanted to write lyrics that never closed or ended, thus all songs and poems comprised one large poem that would last a lifetime. Her early writings were considered part of the Deep Riders movement, which also included the works of Jerome Walker, Emmett Kelly, and Clayton Presley, among others.

Her later work is more personal and conversational, in the Williams mode. Truman was married to the photographer/singer Leiv Believer, who committed suicide just after his receipt of the University Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Michigan State University. Since his death Truman’s work has become more prolific yet much less accessible, a strange irony befitting her original poetic aspirations.

Carletta Sue Kay vocalist Randy Walker is blessed with a four octave vocal range, and writes songs to melt the hearts of the most cynical. Incongruent (Kitten Charmer) -Carletta’s debut full length was released last Spring to extremely warm response and Kay has since shared bills with the likes of Kurt Vile, Thee Oh Sees, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Girls, The Fresh & Onlys, Kelley Stoltz and many others as well as collaborating with The Magnetic Fields on their last studio record Love at the Bottom of the Sea.

“I love Carletta’s singing. She has an androgyny similar to Nina Simone. . . but without the bitterness.” — Stephin Merritt (Magnetic Fields)

“Drag Queens lip synch, so don’t let the wigs fool you, this is one of the best vocalists you could ever hear live, the kind of singer that doesn’t even need a mic, the kind of singer that tugs at your heart
strings. Great songs and a great band elevate Carletta Sue Kay to an extra-ordinary level of performance. Heart, Soul and Talent, on the grandest
levels. I love Carletta Sue Kay.” — Christopher Owens
